Aging. It’s a real conundrum, isn’t it? The knowledge and wisdom are great, but the physical effects are, well, less great. And seeing signs of aging on your face can be strange — especially when you don’t feel any older. While we haven’t figured out how to control time (yet!), we did come up with a few skincare tips that’ll help you appear more youthful. Check them out below.
Definitely Exfoliate
As you age, your skin restores itself at a slower rate than it once did. Dead skin cells don’t get frequently replaced with new skin cells, which means your skin starts to look dull, uneven and possibly cracked. Luckily, there’s a solution. It’s called exfoliating! Exfoliating helps remove the dead cells and encourages new ones to form.
There are two main categories of exfoliants: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants, such as sugar scrubs and cleansers with beads, can be overly harsh on aging skin and make it more susceptible to sagging. So stay away from those. Chemical exfoliants, on the other hand, can help gradually dissolve the bonds between skin cells and are more gentle. The best exfoliants for aging skin are alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid and lactic acid. These acids can also sometimes be found in toners, serums and at-home peels — which is great — but just make sure you’re not over exfoliating. Experts recommend exfoliating no more than three times a week.
Moisturizing is Key
Another result of aging is that your body produces less sebum. This is that oily substance that coats and protects your skin. Having less of it does mean lower chances of getting acne (yay!), but it also means dryer skin (boo!). And one of the big reasons for fine lines is dry skin. Luckily, a good moisturizer can do wonders. Look for products that include retinol or antioxidants, as they’re both helpful in producing a youthful glow.
Wear Sunscreen
We’re sure you’ve heard it a million times, but sunscreen is the way to go. Like, it’s not even an option. Applying sunscreen daily (and reapplying when outdoors) can protect your skin from signs of aging — like hyperpigmentation and fine lines. It also can help shield you from sunburns and cancer, so consider it a win-win-win.
One Word: Collagen
Not only should you be taking care of your skin on the outside, but the inside is super important too. How though? With collagen! It’s the most abundant protein found in the human body, and it provides structure to your skin. Collagen depletes as you get older, so it’s important to get it back in your system with a supplement. Our Clinical Collagen+ Beauty Blend is a convenient solution. It can help reduce eye wrinkles, increase skin’s elasticity and lessen the appearance of fine lines.* Try it out for a month and let us know what you think!
